Harry Brook, on Tuesday (August 22), once again showed the England selectors that they might have made a big blunder in not picking him in the England squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023.

Just a few days after starring with the bat in the Ashes against Australia, the right-handed batsman received a huge setback as he failed to make the cut in England’s provisional 15-member squad for the upcoming tournament in England.

The highly-rated batsman was widely expected to be a part of the England squad for the marquee event in India. However, the English selectors decided against picking up due to veteran allrounder Ben Stokes’ return. The England Test captain has come out of ODI retirement to ply his trade for the ODI side in the World Cup. With Stokes available for selection, the England selectors backed experience over youth.

But on Tuesday, Harry Brook sent a timely reminder to the English team management about his potential by smashing the fastest century in The Hundred. He played a whirlwind knock of 105 runs off just 42 balls with the help of 11 fours and seven sixes.

And as Harry Brook played the scintillating knock, former England captain Kevin Pietersen said that he could see the batsman playing the first World Cup game for England. With the final England squad yet to be announced, Kevin Pietersen believes the batsman will make the cut for the World Cup. Reacting to Harry Brook’s stunning century in The Hundred, the England great took to X (formerly Twitter) to write:

“My view – Harry Brook will play in England’s first game at the CWC!”

Kevin Pietersen was shocked at Harry Brook’s omission:

Earlier Kevin Pietersen had expressed his utter shock over Harry Brook’s exclusion from the England team for the World Cup. Heaping praise on the youngster, the former cricketer stated that he was ‘absolutely flabbergasted’ over Harry Brook not being able to make it to the England World Cup squad.

“I saw this guy in Headingley about two years ago when this tournament took off, and I immediately saw a superstar. I saw somebody who was playing 360, who started to hit balls over extra cover, and the same ball hit them over midwicket,” Kevin Pietersen told Sky Sports.

“I’m absolutely flabbergasted that he cannot make England’s World Cup squad, flabbergasted because he is pure quality. I suppose that’s not sitting on a fence, that’s giving an opinion. I am absolutely flabbergasted that he cannot make England’s World Cup squad,” he added.

England’s provisional World Cup squad: Jos Buttler (capt), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes
