Former Australia captain and India head coach, Greg Chappell, has said the Men in Blue will start as favourites in this year’s ICC ODI World Cup. The thirteenth edition of the World Cup is scheduled to be played in India from October 5 to November 19.
India, who have co-hosted the ODI World Cup thrice in the past, will host it alone for the first time. The tournament will be played across ten venues. In the opening game of the competition, reigning champions England will take on New Zealand in a repeat of the last World Cup final. According to the format, each team will play against the other nine teams once in the league stage before the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals.
Team India will start the tournament as one of the favorites and Greg Chappell believes the home condition will make a huge difference for the hosts. Recalling the days when he was the coach of the Indian team., Greg Chappell said that India hardly faced any difficulty in dealing with the challenges at home. He stated that the current team under Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid is also very strong in home conditions.
“Home advantage makes a huge difference, and I am very sure India will start favourites on home soil. When I was coach of India, one thing I observed was that the Indians are very comfortable in dealing with any challenges thrown at them by any opposition at home. It was evident to me sitting inside the Indian change room and looking out,” Greg Chappell told RevSportz.
“It has not changed, and this Indian team under Rohit [Sharma] and Rahul [Dravid] is a very good one. I think they have a good chance in home conditions,” he added.
Greg Chappell’s warning for Team India:
At the same time, Greg Chappell also fired a warning to India and the fans. The legendary cricketer opined that winning a tournament like the World Cup is not easy and advised the fans to remain cautious with their hopes. He stated that the likes of Australia and England are also strong contenders for the title. The former cricketer also highlighted that the IPL has made it easier for overseas players to perform in India.
“Having said that, winning these tournaments is never easy. So I would urge caution if you are an Indian fan. Be cautiously optimistic. While India will have a very good chance, if things don’t go your way, you should not be heartbroken for it can happen in sport,” he said.
“Some of the other teams like Australia and England are very good teams, and with the IPL, the aura of the conditions have been somewhat demystified over time,” added Greg Chappell.
India will open their World Cup campaign against five-time world champions Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
