India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has said that his dream is to lift the 50-over World Cup trophy and everyone in the Indian team is desperate to win it and end India’s ICC trophy drought.
The Men In Blue have not won a single ICC title since winning the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. India’s last 50-over World Cup victory came in 2011 under the leadership of MS Dhoni and India’s last T20 World Cup title also came under the leadership of Dhoni in 2007.
With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 being held at home, India are one of the favorites to win it and the Rohit Sharma & Co. will be looking forward to finally adding an ICC trophy to their cabinet after recently losing the ICC World Test Championship Final.
Speaking on Thursday, Rohit Sharma said that a team has to work really hard to clinch a World Cup trophy and they have been doing exactly that. He also said that the Men In Blue are armed with “inner confidence” and “self-belief” to win the World Cup at home.
“Honestly, I have never won a (50 overs) World Cup, it’s a dream to win a World Cup and to be here fighting for it nothing makes me happier than that,” Rohit told the media on the sidelines of an event, as quoted by PTI.
“You don’t get World Cups on a platter, you have to really work hard and that is what we have been doing all these years from 2011 till now we all are fighting for it,” the India captain said.
“Everyone is desperate to go and win, because we know we have a good team. We are all good players, that inner confidence and self-belief is there that they can do it. It’s not happened doesn’t mean that we take it lightly. When we lost the 2022 World Cup, I said we will keep fighting for the next World Cup,” he added.
Kabhi na kabhi to milega – Rohit Sharma on winning the ICC trophy
Rohit Sharma also said that they will keep giving their best and at some point, they will definitely will an ICC title.
“The World Test Championship was coming and I said we will keep fighting for it, no matter what. Kabhi na kabhi to milega (we will win it at some point),” he expressed.
Rohit Sharma further said that leading the Indian team will be his secondary role as his primary role in the team is to do well as an opening batsman.
“I need to do first as a batter. Captaincy is secondary… my role in the team is more as a batter. Obviously to captain well as well, (but) first of all, I have to score big runs and win games for the team.”
The Men In Blue will open their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai. The high-profile battle between India and Pakistan is set for October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
