ICC World Cup 2023: List Of Major Batting Records Broken So Far

A total of nine games have been played so far in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. The ongoing thirteenth edition of the competition got underway last week. In the first game of the competition, reigning champions England and New Zealand locked horns against each other at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5.

In the very first game of ICC World Cup 2023, New Zealand caused a huge upset by thrashing the defending champions by 9 wickets. In the second game, Pakistan beat the Netherlands by 81 runs before Bangladesh registered a 6-wicket win over Afghanistan. South Africa opened their World Cup campaign with an impressive 102-run win over Sri Lanka.

On Sunday (October 8), India took on five-time world champions Australia in their World Cup-opener. In a game where fortunes constantly swung from one side to another, the hosts eventually won the clash by six wickets.

New Zealand then beat the Netherlands by 99 runs to extend their winning start. England opened their account with a big win of 137 runs against Bangladesh. Pakistan and India then went on to register their second win in as many games. While Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by six wickets, India inflicted a heavy defeat of eight wickets on Afghanistan.

Records broken so far in ICC World Cup 2023:

While only nine games have been played so far in ICC World Cup 2023, the tournament has already witnessed a number of major batting records being broken.

Here are some of the records that have been broken so far:

  • Highest team total in a World Cup match. South Africa piled up 428/5 against Sri Lanka which is not the highest World Cup total. The record was previously held by Australia for scoring 417/6 against Afghanistan in 2015.
  • Fastest century in World Cup. South Africa’s Aiden Markram hit a 49-ball hundred against Sri Lanka which is now the fastest-ever century in the marquee event. He broke Kevin O’Brien’s record who had scored a 50-ball hundred against England in 2011.
  • Highest match aggregate in World Cup. The match between South Africa and Sri Lanka saw a record 754 runs being scored. After the Proteas scored 428, Sri Lanka scored 326. The previous record was 714 runs scored during the match between Australia and Bangladesh in 2019.
  • Highest successful chase in World Cup. Pakistan chased down 345 runs against Sri Lanka which is now the highest successful chase in the history of the competition. The record was previously held by Ireland who had chased down 328 against England in 2011.
  • Most number of centuries in a World Cup match. The match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka saw as many as four players scoring centuries – Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan.
  • Most centuries after 9 games in a World Cup. A total of 11 centuries have been scored in the ICC World Cup 2023. The previous record after 9 games was 7 centuries which was scored in 2003.

Here are some other milestones achieved by the players:

  • Fastest World Cup century by a Sri Lankan. Kusal Mendis’ 65-ball hundred against Pakistan in Hyderabad is now the fastest century by a Sri Lankan in the competition.
  • Fastest World Cup century by an India. Rohit Sharma scored a 63-ball century against Afghanistan and now holds the record for the fastest World Cup century by an Indian.
