Former India player Karsan Ghavri named his India squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup which will start from the first week of October. While naming the squad, Ghavri snubbed Shreyas Iyer from his team.
Shreyas Iyer, who played his last competitive match in the fourth match of the Border Gavaskar trophy against Australia, has been included again in the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.
Shreyas Iyer was out of action for almost five months after he picked a back injury and had to go through surgery.
Following Iyer’s injury, the India team management started to audition for the number four spot in the batting line up but no one could excel in that position like the 28-year-old has done.
Rohit Sharma-led India’s batting lineup was more affected after KL Rahul suffered a thigh injury during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Later, Rahul had to go through surgery which kept him out of the squad for a brief period of time. Following KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer’s injury India’s middle-order had to go through a tough time.
However, both the injured players have been included in the squad for Asia Cup 2023, which is a relief for the Indian cricket fans and the team members ahead of the tournament.
While speaking to timesnownews.com, Karsan Ghavri named a 13-member squad. Ghavri kept Shreyas Iyer out of the squad.
“Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, one keeper, Ravindra Jadeja, one spinner, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna if he is fit else Mohammed Shami,” Karsan Ghavri said.
Shreyas Iyer has been declared match fit: Ajit Agarkar
While naming India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad, the chief selector of the Men in Blue said that Iyer has fully recovered from his back injury.
However, KL Rahul picked up a niggle for which he might be out for a few games of the tournament but can return after that.
Agarkar also added that due to Rahul’s niggle, Sanju Samson will be traveling with the squad as a reserve player.
“Shreyas (Iyer) has been declared match fit. KL (Rahul) has picked up a small niggle that’s why Sanju is with us. We saw some real promise (from Tilak) in West Indies. It will give him some exposure. We can pick 17 here in the World Cup, it would be 15,” Ajit Agarkar during the press conference.
India will start their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8th at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Men in Blue will take on Pakistan in the high-voltage match on October 14th at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
