ICC World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma Aims To Play High-Risk Shots Despite Leading To Dismissals

Indian captain Rohit Sharma recently opened up about his new attacking style of batting approach from the start in the white-ball formats of international cricket. Rohit Sharma acknowledged the challenge of maintaining a high average alongside an aggressive strike rate in ODI cricket.
Rohit Sharma has adopted that aggressive batting approach in the last few years. The right-handed batter had 27 centuries to his tally in the 50-over format at the end of the ODI World Cup in 2019. However, the batter has scored just three centuries in ODI cricket in the last four years.
It Was Purely My Choice – Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma mentioned that he has maintained a strike rate of 105-110 in ODI cricket over the last few years, whereas his career strike rate is around 90.
“My career strike-rate is around 90 (89.97) but in past couple of years, if you look at my scores and take the strike-rate into consideration, it has been around 105-110. So somewhere you had to compromise.
It is not possible to have a 55 average and a 110 strike-rate. It was purely my choice. My usual batting is still my patent, but I wanted to try something else. I am very happy with the result,” Rohit Sharma said.
Rohit Sharma scored an impressive total of 648 runs during the 2019 World Cup, which included a record-breaking five centuries. The right-handed batter was the leading run-scorer in the tournament.
This Was Communicated By Me To The Management – Rohit Sharma
The veteran Indian opener stated his willingness to attempt high-risk shots even at the cost of dismissals, noting that he had communicated this to the team management.
“Everyone wants to bat long and score those 150s and 170s. I still want to do that, but it is always nice to do something that you have not done. It only adds up in your list of batting abilities. Unless you do it, you won’t know it.
“I know if I play high risk shots, I will get out few times but I didn’t bother. This was communicated by me to the management that this is how I want to play,” he added.
The India cricket team is currently preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, which will be played from August 30 to September 17. India will aim to end the decade-long ICC trophy drought in the ODI World Cup 2023.
