Indian skipper Rohit Sharma provided a big update on middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer’s availability for the upcoming edition of the ODI World Cup at home later this year. Rohit Sharma expressed optimism about Shreyas Iyer’s potential availability for the marquee tournament.

Shreyas Iyer has been out of action in professional cricket since March of this year. The right-handed batter last represented India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia. He underwent surgery for his back injury in London in April and is now undergoing rehabilitation.

Shreyas Iyer Is On Ohe Track To Full Fitness – Rohit Sharma

During the launch event of his academy in California, USA, Rohit Sharma stated that Shreyas Iyer is on track to achieve his full fitness.

“Shreyas Iyer is on the track to full fitness, so fingers crossed for World Cup,” said Rohit Sharma.

Iyer was ruled out of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against Australia and also missed the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. However, he has recently resumed practicing batting at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru since last month.

Shreyas Iyer is Unlikely To be Available For Asia Cup 2023

The Mumbai-born cricketer has been an integral part of the Indian ODI set-up, holding the crucial No. 4 position in the batting order. However, the latest reports suggest that he is unlikely to recover before the start of the Asia Cup 2023, putting his participation in the World Cup in jeopardy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce India’s squad for the Asia Cup in the coming days, which may include Iyer’s fitness report. The team experimented with Suryakumar Yadav in the middle order in the 50-over format, but he failed to impress at No. 4.

Shreyas Iyer made his ODI debut for India in 2017 and went on to represent the team in 43 matches. The KKR skipper scored 1631 runs in 38 innings with an impressive average of 46.6 and a strike rate of 96.51 in the 50-over format. He hit two centuries and 14 half-centuries in his brief career.
