Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan urged the selectors to rest the senior player for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home. Shakib Al Hasan emphasized that the players need to be fresh for the ODI World Cup 2023, which is set to commence on October 5.
The Shakib Al Hasan-led team was on the verge of elimination in the Asia Cup 2023 following their 21-run loss against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Saturday, September 9. The Bangla Tigers suffered back-to-back losses in the Super Four stage of the ongoing continental tournament.
It Will Be Better For The Team – Shakib Al Hasan
Speaking after the game against Sri Lanka, Shakib Al Hasan revealed that they will test a few players against New Zealand, who are in contention for the World Cup squad.
“We will try a few things in the three ODIs against New Zealand. If we can get one or two players from there who can fit into the team [later], it will be better for the team,” Shakib told reporters.
“Everyone has a chance [to play]. I personally believe that those who played in the Asia Cup could be rested from the New Zealand series, especially those who are confirmed for the World Cup.”
The three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and New Zealand is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 26 in Dhaka. The series will be the last outing for both teams before the 10-team marquee tournament.
Want All Four Of Our Fast Bowlers To Remain Fit – Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan emphasized the importance of keeping all their fast bowlers fit ahead of the World Cup, given the limited bench strength of the Bangladesh cricket team.
“We cannot afford injuries in that big tournament, which involves practice matches and lots of travel. We don’t have a lot of bench strength,” he further added.
“It is very important for us that players are fit and healthy for the World Cup. I want all four of our fast bowlers to remain fit, now that Ebadot [Hossain] is out.”
Bangladesh will face Sri Lanka and England in two warm-up matches on September 29 and October 2, respectively. They will take on Afghanistan in their group-stage match in the tournament at Dharamsala on Saturday, October 7.
