Former England captain Eoin Morgan backed the selectors’ decision to exclude young batter Harry Brook from the provisional squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Eoin Morgan highlighted that he can’t fit Harry Brook into England’s squad for the upcoming marquee tournament in India.
Harry Brook failed to make the Jos Buttler-led squad as star all-rounder Ben Stokes reversed his retirement from the 50-over format. The right-handed batter represented the national team in three ODI matches, scoring 86 runs with an average of 28.67 and an impressive strike rate of 98.85.
There Are Really Good Players That Miss Out – Eoin Morgan
During the Hundred broadcast with Sky Sports Cricket, Eoin Morgan pointed out that Harry Brook couldn’t make it into the provisional squad due to the depth in the current England line-up.
“In really good teams that have a lot of talent, but mainly a lot of success, there are really good players that miss out,” Morgan told Sky Sports.
“When I look at the squad that has been selected, I can’t get Harry Brook into that squad,” Morgan further added.
All participants in the World Cup can make changes to their provisional squads until September 27. The tournament will kick off with the match between 2019 finalists England and New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5.
I Just Can’t Fit Harry Brook In – Eoin Morgan
The 2019 World Cup-winning captain emphasized that Harry Brook shouldn’t be included in the national team merely for the sake of it.
“Simply because the return of Ben Stokes adds another middle-order player. Without him bowling, you do need a top-order player as a genuine replacement if somebody in the top order goes down,” he further said.
“You need two seamers and an extra spinner which they have cover for but an extra batter in amongst that, I just can’t fit Harry Brook in, which is amazing to say,” Morgan concluded.
England is set to host New Zealand for a series of T20I and ODI matches. The white-ball series will commence with the T20I leg, with the first match scheduled to be held in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, August 30.
