Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Pune was host to AFG vs SL in the ICC World Cup 2023. The match 30th of the tournament saw Afghanistan thrashing Sri Lanka by wickets and registering their 3rd win of the tournament.
Sri Lanka had a poor start to their innings as they lost Dimuth Karunaratne (15) early. However, Pathum Nissanka (46) and Kusal Mendis (39) made sure that they utilized the batting conditions to the full extent and laid the foundation for the middle order.
But they couldn’t continue after the starts they got as Afghanistan bowlers bowled decently. Sadeera Samarawickrama (36), and Charith Asalanka (22) also tried to play and build the innings but couldn’t get going as well. The bowlers made sure that they kept chipping in with regular wickets and put the batter under pressure.
Angelo Mathews (23) and Maheesh Theekshana (29) played a vital hand in the hand that made sure Afghanistan ended with a fighting total on the board. They were bundled out for 242 runs with Fazalhaq Farooqi being the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 4/34.
Afghanistan were off to a torrid start to their innings as they lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. However, after that, it didn’t seem at all that they were in trouble. Ibrahim Zadran (39) and Rahmat Shah (62) added 73 runs for the second wicket.
After their wickets, Hashmatullah Shahidi (58*) and Azmatullah Omarzai (73*) smashed vital half-centuries and took their team home. They added an unbeaten 111-run partnership and made sure that their team went past the finishing line and registered their 3rd win of the tournament.

After the AFG vs SL Match in the ICC World Cup 2023, Afghanistan toppled Sri Lanka to bag the 5th spot. The island nation was dropped to No.6 whereas the rest of the table is the same. India is at the top followed by South Africa New Zealand and Australia respectively.
