ENG vs AFG: England and Afghanistan were up against each other in the 13th game of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The tournament witnessed an upset as the defending champions were thumped by the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side, who won their first game.

Afghanistan were put into bat first and they were off the flying start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (80) and Ibrahim Zadran (28) added 114 runs for the opening partnership. But after that, England pulled things back significantly well and picked wickets in clusters.

From 114/0 to 190/6, Afghanistan were clearly on the back foot. However, Ikram Alikhil (58) played a magnificent innings under pressure and brought his team back into the game. He was complimented well by Rashid Khan (20) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (28) as they posted a total of 284 runs on the board.

For England, Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with the figures of 3/42 and also bowled one maiden over. Apart from him, Mark Wood bagged two wickets whereas Reece Topley, Liam Livingstone, and Joe Root picked one scalp each

England then had a torrid outing with the bat as they lost wickets in clusters and were under real pressure. Jonny Bairstow (2) perished in the second over and the wickets fell like a pack of cards. Joe Root (11), Jos Buttler (9) and Liam Livingstone (10) were back early. Dawid Malan (32) looked settled at the crease but was dismissed cheaply.

Harry Brook (66) looked the only settled English batter as he blasted a magnificent half-century and kept the hopes of fans alive. But Afghanistan were brilliant with the ball as they kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals and bundled out the opposition for 215 runs to win the game by 69 runs.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged three wickets whereas Rashid Khan also picked three wickets. Apart from Azmatullah Omarzai, every other bowler chipped in and helped the team register the famous win.

Afghanistan after the win jumped to the No.6 spot whereas England were stationed at No.5. India are at the No.1 spot in the points table with an NRR of +1.821. New Zealand and South Africa are No.2 and No.3 respectively.
