ICC World Cup Points Table 2023: Updated Standings, Most Runs, Most Wickets After ENG vs SL: The 25th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 saw the battle between Jos Buttler-led England National Cricket Team and Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26.
England won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. They made three huge changes to their playing XI as Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone replaced Reece Topley, Harry Brook, and Gus Atkinson. The Lankan Team, on the other hand, brought Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Kumara into the playing XI.
Batting first, England were off to a good start in the match as the opening duo of Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow added 45 runs together. Sri Lanka, however, made a stunning comeback in the match and picked up the wickets at regular intervals to reduce the Three Lions from 45/0 to 85/5.
Lahiru Kumara dismissed Jos Buttler (8) and Liam Livingstone (1), Angelo Mathews dismissed Dawid Malan (28), and Kasun Rajitha cleaned up Jonny Bairstow (30). In-form batter Joe Root (3) was the unfortunate one as he got run out after an awful mix-up with Jonny Bairstow.
The ‘ClutchGod’ Ben Stokes tried to steady the ship for England along with veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali (15), but they were unsuccessful as the latter was dismissed by the ‘man with the golden arm’ Angelo Mathews. The duo added 37 runs in 46 balls.
In the end, England’s lower order consisting of capable hitters in David Willey, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, and Mark Wood failed miserably while Ben Stokes was removed by Lahiru Kumara after scoring 43 runs off 73 balls. The Jos Buttler-led side were bundled out for 156 in 33.2 overs, which was the lowest-ever ODI score in Bengaluru.
Chasing the target, the Kusal duo of Perera and Mendis got out for 4 and 11, but Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama steadied the ship and once again pushed England on the back foot.
Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama hit brilliant half-centuries and they finished with scores of 77 and 65 to hand England a humiliating 8wickets loss with 146 balls remaining.
