Shubman Gill creates history in the first innings

India were invited to bat first in the match by England after losing the toss, and they lost KL Rahul early on in the innings on an excellent batting track.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Karun Nair (31) shifted some momentum back towards India, but the comeback man Nair was again unable to play a longer innings.

Captain Shubman Gill walked in to bat at his new No.4 position in the 24th over and played an iconic knock, staying in the middle till the 144th over.

Shubman Gill scored a sensational 269 runs off 387 balls, and his innings was studded with 30 fours and 3 sixes. He broke Virat Kohli's record for the highest score by an Indian Test captain and became just the second Indian captain to register a Test double hundred away from home, after Kohli. He also became the second youngest Indian captain to hit a Test double-hundred after MAK Pataudi and registered the highest score by an Asian Test captain outside of the subcontinent.

Gill was supported very well by the lower-order batters late in the innings and Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) made good contributions and steered India to a colossal score of 587.

India clinch historic win against England

In their first innings with the ball, India got off to an exceptional start as Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj reduced the Three Lions to 25/3. Misery for England didn't end there, as Mohammed Siraj's twin strikes sent Joe Root and Ben Stokes back on consecutive deliveries and the hosts were reduced to 84/5.

It looked like England would be easily rolled over below 200 runs, but Harry Brook and Jamie Smith didn't let that happen and stitched up a historic partnership.

The England duo put together a 303-run stand, with Harry Brook scoring 158 and Jamie Smith smashing an unbeaten 184*. England were eventually bowled out for 407, handing India an 180-run lead, as Mohammed Siraj picked 6 wickets and Akash Deep got 4.

Meanwhile, India piled up 427/6 in their second innings with the bat, before declaring and setting up a target of 608 runs for the Bazballers. Shubman Gill smashed a historic 161 while KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja hit good fifties.

While defending the target, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj provided India with a solid start and reduced the English team to 50/3. Then, on the final day after a delayed start, Akash Deep completed his 6-wicket haul and received good support from others as India bowled out England for 271 to register a humongous 336-run victory. It was the first Test victory for Team India at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
