On a day when champion Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made headlines thanks to his brilliant six-wicket-haul in County cricket, the Tamil Nadu cricketer claimed his 7th scalp on Twitter.

Ashwin affected the off-field dismissal via a cheeky reply to a user who had tried to take a dig at the veteran spinner by invoking the “Spirit of Cricket” in the “Mankading” debate.

It all happened when a Pakistani video archivist posted a video of former all-rounder Kapil Dev running out South Africa’s Peter Kirsten during a 1992 ODI in the rainbow nation.

Dev, who had already warned Kirsten for backing up too far in the proceeding ODI, went on to run him out in the next game, and a heated exchange followed between the duo.

Commenting on the video, the user said that Kapil Dev played it fair as he had already warned the batter besides waiting for him to leave his crease before affecting the run-out. The user tagged Ashwin in the video.

“Kapil has played it very fair…by warning Kirsten once and not claiming the first time. More importantly he did it by NOT stopping and waiting for Kirsten to go out of the crease. This is in the true spirit. @ashwinravi99 @DineshKarthik @bhogleharsha @vijaylokapally @kartikmurali” said the user.

Ashwin, who had caused quite a furor after he ‘mankaded’ Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler in an IPL game during the 2019 season, was quick to notice.

Reacting to the dig, Ashwin went on to write that he would run out the non-striker again without giving him a prior warning.

He also took a dig at the user by stating that he would the latter’s approval before affecting the dismissal and he hopes that the user wouldn’t complain to his parents.

“I would do it again if a batsman goes out of the crease. I would also like to seek your permission to do the same cos if a bowler needs to run a batter out that way, he/she needs to premeditate, the same and hopefully you will approve of the same med not tell my parents about it,” Ashwin wrote.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner has warmed up for the upcoming Test series against England brilliantly.

He featured for a Sussex in a county game against Somerset this week and ended up taking a total of seven wickets in the game, which includes a brilliant spell of 6/27 in the second innings.

The Indians will hope that the champion cricketer carries his form in the forthcoming rubber against hosts, England.
