“Who would you want to bat for you if your life depended on it?” It’s a question that Test cricket enthusiasts frequently ask each other. We all have options, some more obvious than others. Jos Buttler, the recently chosen England white-ball captain, chose the safest option in this regard.

“Rahul Dravid,” he said in a Rajasthan Royals video from IPL 2022 that recently resurfaced, with Ravichandran Ashwin addressing the question to his pink and blue partner.

Rahul Dravid Is The Wall: Jos Buttler

“He’s the wall; you can’t go past him.” He’d bat every day. Ashwin then told the English opener that he will share this response with his India head coach, to which the latter responded, “Yeah, let him know.”

Buttler presently leads England in a three-match T20I series against India at home. The hosts were defeated by Rohit Sharma’s side by 50 runs in the opening match, and Buttler was clean bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar from his first ball.

The Englishman was named the IPL 2022 Most Valuable Player after hitting 863 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate close to 150. The 31-year-old also made 248 runs for England in three One-Day International series against the Netherlands and was appointed as Eoin Morgan’s replacement as England’s ODI and T20I captain in June.

The talismanic keeper-batter was not the only one in the Rajasthan Royals dressing room who chose Dravid as their “bat for me with my life on the line.”

When Lasith Malinga enquired about the former India captain, RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara also mentioned him. “You know he’s unbelievable in that role, The wall. There’s a reason for that name,” the 44-year-old said.

Dravid is just behind Sachin Tendulkar for most runs in Test cricket for an Indian player. Overall he is 4th on the list. Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis are ahead of him.
