Speculations are rife that Babar Azam might be sacked as the captain of the Pakistan team after the poor show in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
The Pakistan captain’s leadership skills have been questioned by several quarters as he failed to lead his team from the front in the marquee event. Not very long ago, the Men in Green were the number one side in the world and were one of the favorites to win the World Cup. However, they failed to live up to the expectations and finished their campaign in a disappointing manner.
The 1992 World Cup winners once again failed to progress ahead of the league stage. They finished their campaign with just 4 wins and 5 defeats to end up at the fifth spot in the ten-team competition. Throughout the competition, Babar Azam faced severe criticism for his captaincy. His poor performance with the bat only added pressure on him.
Kamran Akmal urges Babar Azam to leave captaincy:
In 9 games, Babar Azam managed to score 320 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of just over 80. Many experts have attributed his failure to bat aggressively as one of the reasons behind Pakistan’s struggles. The right-handed batsman was also accused of favoritism in the team. Reports also suggest that the Pakistan captain has fallen out of favor with top PCB officials.
And as the Pakistan batter star faces the heat, former wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has urged him to quit captaincy. Speaking at a recent event, the former Pakistan cricketer stated that Babar would have to give up captaincy if he wanted to excel as a batsman in international cricket.
“‘Babar Azam is my brother and it’s my advice to him to quit captaincy. If he wants to score 25,000 international runs and if our nation wants him to do it, he has to play as a batter only,” said Kamran Akmal.
