Former India batsman Navjot Singh Sidhu has strongly refuted a social media post that falsely claimed he made a controversial statement about Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

Both Gambhir and Agarkar have been in the firing line of Rohit Sharma fans ever since the latter was removed as India's ODI captain. Rohit was replaced by Shubman Gill as the ODI captain earlier this month, much to everyone's surprise.

While Rohit led India to the title in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, the selectors and the team management decided to hand over the captaincy to a youngster.

With Gambhir and Agarkar facing the heat, a fan page on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that Navjot Singh Sidhu had called for their removal. The post also suggested that Rohit should be reinstated as the captain if India wants to win the 2027 ODI World Cup.

"If India wants to win the 2027 ODI World Cup, then BCCI should remove Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir as soon as possible and hand over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma again with full respect," stated the quote on the post.

Navjot Singh Sidhu noticed the post on the social media platform and was quick to respond to it. The former cricketer-turned-commentator took to X to set the record straight as he wrote:

"Never said it, don’t spread fake news, never imagined it. Shame on you."

Gautam Gambhir's tenure so far:

Gautam Gambhir took charge of the Indian team as the head coach in July last year. He replaced Rahul Dravid immediately after the latter guided the Indian team to glory in the T20 World Cup.

While the reign did not start in a promising manner for Gautam Gambhir, things have gone really well for him and the Indian team last year. Towards the end of 2024, India performed poorly in Tests and failed to qualify for the WTC final. They suffered a whitewash in the home series against New Zealand before losing the series in Australia as well.

However, the Indian team has done really well this year. After winning the ODI and T20I series against England at home, the Men in Blue clinched the Champions Trophy in the UAE. It was followed by a fine outing in England, where they drew the five-match series 2-2.

Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the team is currently in Australia for a limited-overs tour. India suffered a loss in the first ODI and will look to bounce back when the second match takes place on Thursday.
