England‘s campaign in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 went from bad to worse as they suffered a 100-run defeat against hosts India in Lucknow.

It was England’s fifth defeat in six games and fourth in a row. The win has left them rooted at the bottom of the points table. They are one of the only two teams who have managed just one win in the competition so far. Against India, England started well with the ball and had them reeling at 40 for 3. India did well to recover but eventually finished with a modest total of 229 for 9.

The English batters, however, failed to capitalise on their bowlers’ good performance. England came up with one of their worst batting performances in ODIs in recent times and were all out for just 129 runs. Liam Livingstone (27) was the only player who managed to reach the 20-run mark during the disastrous batting display.

Matthew Mott denies ‘unsettled’ reports:

Head coach Matthew Mott attended the post-match press conference after England’s defeat against India. During the conference, he was asked about any prevailing issue of unrest in the dressing room. The talk about unrest in the England camp started doing the rounds after their former captain Eoin Morgan suggested that the reason behind the poor performance is down to them being “unsettled” behind the scenes.

Matthew Mott, however, rubbished the claims. Saying that Morgan is entitled to his opinion, the former Australia women team’s coach said that England are an ‘incredibly tight-knit unit.’ He stated that the mood in the English camp is very positive despite the string of poor results in the ongoing World Cup.

“No, not really. I don’t think that at all. I think anyone that’s inside our tent at the moment would say that despite our results, we’re an incredibly tight-knit unit. I said to the boys the other day, Dave Humphries, who’s a former rugby international, was flabbergasted just how tight the unit was when he came in for a week to observe us, given the results that we’ve had,” said Matthew Mott.

“There’s every opportunity when you’re losing – to splinter and go separate ways. I can only say from my opinion the group’s been incredibly strong in that part. If you see our training sessions, they’re full of fun. People are putting their arms around each other, trying to help them. It’s easy to do that when you’re winning. It’s a lot harder when you’re losing. I’m proud that we keep trying to get up,” he added.

Speaking further, Matthew Mott said that the English camp has a very good relationship with former captain Morgan, saying:

“Eoin’s entitled to his opinion. He’s obviously been away for a couple of weeks with the birth of his child. He hasn’t been in and around the rooms, but I’ll certainly take that up with him and have a chat with him. We’ve got a really good relationship with him. So, if he’s seeing something that I’m not, I’ll definitely have that conversation.”

With only 1 win from 6 games, England’s chances of making it to the semifinals are all but gone. The reigning champions would now be looking to win their remaining three games in order to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
