The 27-year-old United Arab Emirates (UAE) batter Chirag Suri, who plays for Dubai Capitals (DC) in the International League T20 (ILT20) 2023, has said that his DC teammate and former India batter, Robin Uthappa, is humble, welcoming, and open to questions.
On September 14, 2022, Robin Uthappa announced his retirement from all forms of international and Indian cricket and obtained a no-objection Certificate (NOC) from Kerala, to play overseas T20 leagues. He is currently playing for the Dubai Capitals in the inaugural edition of the ILT20.
In an exclusive conversation with News18 Cricketnext, the Indian-origin batter Chirag Suri was asked to share his feelings on the presence of Robin Uthappa in the DC squad. He elaborated:
“I have been watching him for years now and the consistency he has had for all these years, it’s amazing to be around him. It’s great exposure that we are getting. Moreover, you get to learn a lot by just watching them in the nets and the practice sessions. It’s a great opportunity for us.
“He is very humble and welcoming and open to questions. He says, “seekhna hai to pucho na. Kyun nahi puchre (Ask questions if you wanna learn)”. That’s the kind of nature which is very inspiring. I would love to replicate this. If you can help someone in a small manner, that’s simply great.”
Virat Kohli is my ultimate role model – Chirag Suri
Suri, who shifted base to UAE when he was 10 and a half, during the same interaction revealed that the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli is his “ultimate role model”. He stated:
“Virat Kohli is my ultimate role model. The way he has groomed himself over the years and how he changed his fitness regimes and other things is just amazing. Plus, he is a Delhi boy so, I have always related to him a lot and love his energy.
“You can change certain things in yourself but some things are natural and a player should keep that. Virat bhai has taken the best out of both. Now he is such an amazing player.”
Chirag Suri has played 35 ODIs and 31 T20Is for UAE and has scored 941 ODI runs and 817 T20I runs respectively. He has smashed 2 tons and 5 fifties in ODIs while 7 half-centuries in T20Is.
