Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie recently created a buzz on social media ahead of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season. The newly appointed Hyderabad Kingsmen head coach Jason Gillespie went viral after refusing to take part in traditional promotional arrival videos, calling them “stupid.”
The Hyderabad Kingsmen will enter PSL 2026 as a brand-new franchise this year. Gillespie joined the team’s management in January, marking his return to Pakistan in a coaching role. He had stepped down as Pakistan’s red-ball coach before their Test series against South Africa in December 2024.

The viral 29-second social media clip shows a camera searching a hotel lobby before spotting Jason Gillespie standing casually on a balcony. Gillespie gave a cheeky response when asked to record his official PSL arrival video.
Speaking from the balcony, Gillespie dismissed the promotional request while maintaining a professional mindset. The Hyderabad Kingsmen head coach stated that he had more important coaching duties instead of filming repetitive social media content.
“I am not coming down. I have a lot of work to do. I’m not going to shoot those stupid welcome videos,” Gillespie said in the viral video on social media.
After his response, Gillespie walked away with a lighthearted thumbs-up. Fans praised the franchise for the creative moment, with many enjoying the subtle dig at repetitive slow-motion arrival videos used by other teams.
Marnus Labuschagne has been appointed captain of the Hyderabad Kingsmen for the upcoming PSL season. He becomes the third Australian to lead a franchise this year, joining David Warner and Ashton Turner in taking up leadership roles across teams.
Labuschagne does not have much T20 captaincy experience and is not a regular in the format. He joined the franchise through a direct signing and will work closely with head coach Jason Gillespie and the support staff to lead the squad.
The Kingsmen squad includes experienced players like Glenn Maxwell, Kusal Perera, and Saim Ayub. The management chose Labuschagne to lead, trusting his leadership qualities to guide a relatively new and developing team this season.
PSL 2026 to Be Played Behind Closed Doors as PCB Limits Matches to Lahore and Karachi
The eleventh edition of the Pakistan Super League will be played without spectators due to the ongoing West Asia crisis. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has limited the tournament to two venues, with matches scheduled only in Lahore and Karachi.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi also confirmed that the traditional opening ceremony in Lahore has been cancelled. The board has taken these steps to ensure smooth operations and maintain safety during the tournament.
Hyderabad Kingsmen, led by Marnus Labuschagne, will begin their campaign against three-time champions Lahore Qalandars in the opening match at Gaddafi Stadium on March 26. The fixture will take place behind closed doors without any fans in attendance.
