Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has questioned Imad Wasim’s exclusion from the limited-overs squad announced for Pakistan’s South Africa and Zimbabwe tour. Pakistan will visit Zimbabwe and South Africa to participate in all three formats. The men in green play three ODIs and four T20Is in South Africa before moving to Zimbabwe for two Tests and three T20Is. Shoaib Akhtar highlighted that Imad Wasim is too good to ignore.
Imad Wasim last played for Pakistan in the T20 series in New Zealand as the selectors left him out of the home T20s against South Africa. Chief selector Mohammad Wasim justified Imad’s exclusion by saying that they have decided to persist with Mohammad Nawaz. The latter they felt deserved another chance to showcase his skills in white-ball cricket. Nawaz picked up three wickets in three T20Is at an economy rate of 6.10.
Pakistan also surprised by opting for opening batsman Sharjeel Khan, who has faced several spot-fixing charges. Sharjeel Khan was the third-highest run-getter in the curtailed PSL 2021 season, finishing behind Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam and recording a strike rate of 170.94. The Karachi Kings batsman was the only one to score a hundred in the edition, doing so against Islamabad United.
Shoaib Akhtar questions Imad Wasim’s omission and Shahnawaz Dhani’s inclusion:
Shoaib Akhtar stated that PCB should not have left out Imad Wasim as he is too good to axe. Meanwhile, fast bowler Shahnawaz Dhani has to have more first-class experience before joining the national team. The 22-year old has featured in eight matches so far, picking up 27 scalps at 33.70. The Rawalpindi Express also called for seasoned sports administrators to organize Club Cricket and nurture talent.
“He [Imad Wasim] deserved a place in the T20 squad as he is too good to be dropped from the T20 team. Shahnawaz Dhani has also been selected but he needs to play more first-class cricket. I myself am a product of Club cricket. We need seasoned sports administrators to organize Club cricket and help groom talent,” Akhtar said as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
