Recently, KL Rahul shattered a marvelous knock of unbeaten 97 runs to lead India to victory against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023. However, KL Rahul missed on his century by 3 runs. Speaking about the incident, former India opener Gautam Gambhir said that scoring a hundred does not matter if the team ends up winning.
KL Rahul scored the winning six in the match. However, he later admitted that he wanted to hit a boundary first and then a six so as to reach his century in the match. He won the Player of the Match award for his amazing knock.
Scoring A Hundred Does Not Matter If Team Wins- Gautam Gambhir
Speaking about the incident with Sportskeeda, cricketer-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir said that scoring a hundred does not matter if the team ends up winning.
“For me, it really does not matter whether you score a hundred or you score whatever you end up scoring, if the team ends up winning. If you are staying until the end to take the team to victory, that is all that matters”.
“Let’s get done with this obsession over stats. Scoring a hundred does not matter, whether you can take your team to victory or not, that matters,” Gambhir said.
The 41-year-old also said that this obsession with stats is one of the reasons that India has not won an ICC tournament in so many years.
“If you score 30, 40 or even 140, what matters in the end is whether the team won or not. I think our obsession with stats is one of the biggest reasons why we have not won a ICC tournament in so many years,” Gautam Gambhir further said.
Speaking about the IND vs AUS match, India bowled out Australia for 199 with a 3-wicket haul by Ravindra Jadeja. Later, India faced a tricky situation by losing the first three batsmen for ducks in the first two overs.
Later, Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) etched a 165-run partnership for 4th wicket to drive the team to victory. India will next face Afghanistan on October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
