IND vs AFG: Parthiv Patel Lashes Out At Shubman Gill For Not Trusting Rohit Sharma

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel had a choice of words for opener Shubman Gill who was part of a mix-up with skipper Rohit Sharma getting run out for a duck.
Rohit after hitting the ball to the mid-off region, asked for a single to Gill who was not aware of his captain’s call and it resulted in an ugly turn of events at Punjab’s Mohali cricket ground.
The mix-up or confusion happened in the second ball of the 1st over itself when Rohit Sharma had glanced at Fazalhaq Farooqi’s delivery to mid-off and instantly ran for a single. However, he did not check in on Shubman Gill who was just looking at the ball reach the fielder instead of hearing his captain’s call.
It eventually ended up with Rohit getting run out for a duck after facing the first 2 deliveries at the striker’s end. The incident infuriated the Indian captain badly who cussed a few words to Shubman Gill in sheer anger. Rohit’s anger was justified for more than one reason.
Firstly, it was Gill’s fault that he was not aware of his partner’s call and secondly, it was Rohit’s first International T20 outing since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in November. The 36-year-old was looking to get some runs under his belt upon his return but Gill’s mistake meant that Rohit Sharma’s return was extremely short-lived.
The duo who regularly open together in ODIs, were batting together in T20Is for the first time. After Rohit was dismissed for a duck, Shubman Gill was stumped out by a deceiving delivery from Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the last ball of the 4th over. He departed after scoring 23 off 12 with a strike rate of over 190.
Despite Rohit Sharma’s Duck, India Win The 1st T20 Thanks To The Shivam Dube Show
Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel after the match ended shared his two cents on the incident. He said Shubman Gill should have trusted Rohit Sharma and blamed the former for causing the misunderstanding in the middle.
“Shubman Gill should have just trusted Rohit Sharma. I know that they are playing for the first time in T20 Internationals but they both have played a lot of cricket together as ODI openers and Test openers. I think there was a clear misunderstanding here as Shubman Gill was watching the ball but he should have just run at Rohit Sharma’s call.” – said Parthiv Patel.
Things might have escalated and Shubman Gill would have received a lot of backlash had India lost the match. However, Shivam Dube’s marvelous 40-ball 60 helped India reach the target of 159 by the 18th over and Dube for his match-winning knock ended up becoming the man of the match. The 2nd T20I will take place on January 14th at Indore’s Holkar Stadium.
