Indian captain Rohit Sharma is all set to equal the record of most wins as skipper in T20 internationals if the Men in Blue can complete a 3-0 whitewash of Afghanistan in the 3rd T20I here at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium later today.

Team India have already won the series by 2-0 and another win today will see them finish their first series of 2024 in style. It is their last T20 series against international opponents and they will be playing no games in the shortest format after this except for the IPL which starts in March and ends right before the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies.

Rohit Sharma who has experienced a turmoil kind of a return as a batter in T20s after a gap of 14 months, equaled former captain MS Dhoni’s long-standing record of most wins as Indian captain in the shortest format of 41 wins. Rohit completed that feat when India registered a 6-wicket win at Indore’s Holkar stadium.

His next aim is to emulate the record of most wins as captain in the format and Rohit Sharma could do so if his side completes the first whitewash of the year. He will join former Afghanistan, England, and Pakistan skipper Asghar Afghan, Eoin Morgan, and Babar Azam who led their respective nations to 42 wins, excluding super overs and bowlouts.

A win tonight will also help him become India’s most successful captain in the shortest format. Rohit Sharma took over as the captain back in 2021 when Virat Kohli resigned from the role after a humiliating group stage exit from that year’s T20 World Cup as losses against arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand proved to be costly with India finishing 3rd in Group B with 6 points.

Then next year when the T20 World Cup headed to Australia, Rohit Sharma led the Indian team for the first time in any ICC event. Under his captaincy, the team finished on top of Group B with 8 points to their name but endured a very tough loss by 10 wickets against England in the semi-final.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remained out of the T20 setup since then before they returned during the ongoing series.

Can Rohit Sharma Get Over His Purple Patch In T20s?

While Rohit Sharma the captain is on the verge of becoming the most successful ever in the format, the major question that is arising at the moment is can he get over his purple patch as a batsman? He has not been able to score a single run in this series as of now and today he will have to get some runs under his belt.

In fact Rohit Sharma in his last 4 T2os on home soil has got out for 4 consecutive ducks, twice against South Africa and Afghanistan and twice at the Holkar stadium. He currently stands as the world’s second-highest run score in the format with 3853 runs and he is only behind his teammate Virat Kohli who has 4037 runs in 34 fewer matches than Rohit Sharma.
