Afghanistan pace bowler Naveen-ul-Haq opened up about his decision to retire from ODIs after the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 in India. Naveen-ul-Haq described retiring from the ODI format at a very young age as quite a tough decision to make in his international career.
Naveen-ul-Haq took to social media on September 27 to declare his retirement from ODI cricket, with the World Cup as his last outing. He said that this decision was made to extend his cricketing career. He assured that he would remain part of the Afghanistan team for T20Is.

In a video shared on his official Instagram handle, Naveen-ul-Haq expressed how challenging it was to decide between pursuing his dream of representing his country and other options that came his way.
???It was a quite tough decision to make. As a kid when you start playing and when you start playing, you dream about representing your country. Then suddenly you have to take a decision at the early stage of your career,??? Naveen said.

Naveen-ul-Haq has participated in only eight ODI matches for Afghanistan since his debut in 2016. He has taken 15 wickets at an average of 25.80 in the format. He managed to secure a spot in the World Cup 2023 lineup after a two-year absence.

Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan expressed hope that Naveen might reconsider his decision to retire from ODI cricket. Rashid mentioned that many players have reversed their retirements from intentional cricket.
???I hope he does think about it and get it back ??? retirement. I have seen so many players do that and hopefully, it does happen for him as well. He could help and do well for Afghanistan in the future in this format and deliver the best for the team,??? Rashid said.
Naveen has been named in Afghanistan???s playing XI for the match against host India in their second match of the World Cup at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, October 11.
