The three-match T20I series between India and Afghanistan marked the return of Indian captain Rohit Sharma to T20Is. Rohit is leading the Indian T20I side after 14 months and played his last T20I match during the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England. India faced a humiliating 10-wicket loss and since then Virat and Rohit have been focusing on the ODIs and Tests.

However, as the T20 World Cup is around the corner and will start on June 1, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have returned to the shortest international format. While Virat opted out of the first IND vs AFG T20I match due to personal reasons, Rohit shared a lot of funny moments during the first innings of the match.

Indian pacer Mukesh Kumar got rid of dangerous Azmatullah Omarzai on the first ball of the 18th over. Omarzai was trying to slog a full-pitched ball that was outside the off stump but ended up dragging the ball 0nto the stumps. In the same over, Rohit Sharma was seen hitting Mukesh on his head in a friendly manner and the duo shared a laugh after the incident. The incident happened after the pacer bowled back-to-back bouncers and it was called a no-ball.

Afghanistan got off to a decent start during the first IND vs AFG T20I match and their openers added 50 runs for the first wicket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz at one end was dismissed for 23 runs whereas Ibrahim Zadran departed for 25 runs. Azmatullah Omarzai started to play his shots from ball 1 and hit 29 runs from 22 balls including 2 fours and one six.

Mohammad Nabi was the highest run scorer in the Afghanistan innings and scored 42 runs from 27 balls with two fours and three sixes. Nabi scored runs at a strike rate of 155.56. After Nabi’s departure, Najibullah Zadran and Karim Janat gave the finishing touch to Afghanistan and helped them reach 158/5.

Chasing down the target, India faced a poor start as Rohit Sharma was run out for a duck. However, Shubman Gill started playing shots from the other end and scored 23 runs from 12 balls which included 5 fours. Though, Gill fell to Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Tilak Varma scored 26 off 22 balls whereas Jitesh Sharma scored 31 runs from 20 balls and took the Indian innings forward. However, in the current situation, the Indian team is inching close to the target with Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh at the crease.

India have not won a T20 World Cup in the last 16 years and last lifted the trophy back in 2007 under MS Dhoni. India reached the semi-finals of the tournament in the 2016 and 2022 editions but failed to make it to the finals.

Now, India will want to end their ten-year-old drought of an ICC title by lifting the T20 World Cup trophy. India will be up against Ireland in their first match of the tournament on June 5. The tournament is all set to take place in the USA and West Indies and the Indian team are the prime favorites to lift the title.
