In the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, India's strategic use of their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, will be one of the most challenging issues, and all eyes will be on their workload management during the grueling Test series.

In a high-stakes five-match Test series, where Jasprit Bumrah’s relentless pace and aggressive bowling style put immense pressure on his body, Paras Mhambrey highlighted the crucial role of workload management for India's ace pacer on the Australia tour.

Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management key to India's success in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

The former Indian bowling coach has emphasized the need for meticulous workload management to keep Jasprit Bumrah firing on all cylinders throughout the grueling five-match Test series against Australia, starting on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Given the demanding nature of fast bowling, particularly Bumrah's intense and high-energy style, each session can be physically and mentally taxing, leading the former Indian bowling coach to believe that the star pacer may not be able to play all five Test matches in Australia.

Reflecting on India’s previous tour in England, where Bumrah was rested for a Test match, Paras Mhambrey hinted at similar plans to ensure his availability when they need him most in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

I'm not sure Boom will play all 5 Test matches: Paras Mhambrey

Mhambrey suggested that the Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and team management will have to be smart enough to make strategic decisions and choose the right moments for Jasprit Bumrah to step back, as this move could preserve his performance levels and allow him to recover adequately.

Paras Mhambrey was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times: “Well, workload management, in general, is being taken care of not only for this series because we've been part of this from our term. I'm sure that's going to continue. If you look at England, Boom had to miss a Test match. The call is when do you take that step? It's going to be important looking at the series, a 5-Test series.”

He further explained, “I'm not sure Boom will play all 5 Test matches. It's extremely hard on his body. It's just the way he goes about his bowling. He's flat out in every spell, every delivery that he bowls. So, there's a lot of stress on his body, and we'll have to be smart enough to make such decisions.”

Paras Mhambrey calls for strategic breaks to keep Jasprit Bumrah fresh in exhausting Australia Test series

The former bowling coach has stressed that India’s depth in pace options could support a seamless rotation, but timing will be crucial to reserve Bumrah's contributions without compromising team dynamics, and it is certain that he will need a break on the Australia tour.

However, Mhambrey hopes that the Indian team management would have already made cautious planning to keep its star pacer Bumrah at the peak of his prowess, ready to strike when the high-voltage Test series reaches its decisive phases with a proactive approach in Australia.

Mhambrey signed off by saying, “The challenge is going to be which Test match [he decides to rest] and depending on the way the series stands. So yeah, you will have to give him a break. These days, guys have to make a decision when actually that moment arrives. And hopefully, we're well ahead in the series. I hope so.”
