Calling India the favorites to win the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has explained what the hosts need to go all the way in the tournament.
A total of ten teams – India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, South Africa, and Bangladesh are participating in the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup. The highly-anticipated tournament got underway earlier this week with the match between reigning champions England and New Zealand.
New Zealand proved their title credentials by inflicting a 9-wicket defeat over England who are one of the strongest contenders for the competition. In the second game of the competition, Pakistan recovered from a poor start with the bat to beat the Netherlands by 81 runs.
And while the likes of England, Pakistan, Australia, and New Zealand are being considered as strong contenders for the World Cup, Mohammad Amir believes India will win the tournament if three of their players have a good outing in the competition.
Speaking on Pakistan’s Hasna Mana Hai show, the left-arm pacer said that India could win the World Cup if Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah perform well from the start.
“Agar ye teen bande from Day 1 se perform karenge naa—Bumrah, Rohit aur Kohli—India final jeetega,” said Mohammad Amir. (Roughly translated to: If these three guys – Bumrah, Rohit and Kohli – perform from day 1, India will win the final).
Mohammad Amir predicts World Cup semifinalists:
Speaking further, the Champions Trophy-winning bowler predicted the four semifinalists for the 2023 World Cup. The 31-year-old backed India, England, Australia, and Pakistan to make it to the next stage of the competition.
“England, India, Australia, Pakistan. Pehele main New Zealand ko kar raha tha par ab Pakistan ko kyuki ab Pakistan team par koi pressure nahi hai. Jab Pakistan team ko sab write off karte hai naa fir humari team aake kuch different karti hai,” said Mohammad Amir. (Roughly translated to: I was backing New Zealand at first but picking Pakistan now because there is no pressure on them. Pakistan performs well after being written off by everyone)
