The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has stated the good news of Mohammed Shami's return in a press release and claimed that he is a part of Bengal's squad to face Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy.

Mohammed Shami's last professional match

Mohammed Shami last played a professional match in the famous ODI World Cup final in 2023 at Ahmedabad. He had been injured in the middle of the tournament but continued to play despite the pain.

His brilliant performance in the World Cup helped India reach the final where they eventually suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Australia. However, Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 24 wickets in 7 matches at a brilliant average of 10.70.

He missed the subsequent South Africa tour due to the injury. Earlier this year, he realized that the surgery was the only option to heal the injury and thus, decided to go under the knife.

Because of the timing of his surgery, he missed various important tournaments like the IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup 2024 as well. He was expected to make a comeback in the start of India's home Test season against Bangladesh but was unable to be fit on time.

Shami was close to return for the New Zealand Tests and was expected to play one of the Tests against New Zealand. However, he found his knee to be swollen which further delayed his return. As a result, he was also not considered for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Shami has been a great asset for India over the year. The right-arm fast bowler is highly experienced of bowling across various conditions in the world. He is a genuine wicket-taker with the new ball and equally threatening with his skills with the old ball.

The 34-year-old quick has played 64 Tests so far and picked up 229 wickets at an average of 27.71. Although he is not a part of the Border-Gavaslar Trophy, he can play a key role for India in the next year's Champions Trophy.
