Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir lauded Rohit Sharma for his exceptional batting performance against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. Gautam Gambhir emphasized that Rohit Sharma’s form is a positive sign for Team India for the upcoming matches.

The Afghanistan batters set a target of 273 runs for India after opting to bat first in Delhi on October 11. In response, Rohit Sharma scored 131 runs off 84 deliveries to help the team secure victory with 15 overs to spare. He was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his knock.

Rohit Sharma Will Get A Lot Of Confidence – Gautam Gambhir

Speaking to Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir mentioned that Rohit Sharma‘s impressive batting display will boost the team’s confidence ahead of the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match.

“You won’t just look at the quality but the sort of shots that were played. You can ignore the attack because of the way he dominated, these are great signs that it has come early in the World Cup,” Gambhir told Star Sports.

“He didn’t score runs in the first match but the way he batted today, especially when the next match is India-Pakistan, you want to go to that match after scoring runs. You don’t want to go with two back-to-back failures and Rohit Sharma will get a lot of confidence from this knock.”

The Men in Blue will face Pakistan in their next match of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14. The hosts have a strong record against their neighboring team, defeating them on all occasions in ODI World Cup history.

Rohit Sharma Doesn’t Take That Much Risk – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir mentioned that Rohit observed the conditions in the first two overs and adjusted his batting approach accordingly.

“He has his template set. In the middle, it was happening quite a few times that when he was batting well, instead of taking time, he was trying to hit from the first ball itself,” Gambhir further added.

“However, today the good thing was that he saw what was happening in the first two overs and then once Rohit starts, we all know it’s very difficult to stop him. The best thing is that he doesn’t take that much risk, just plays cricketing shots based on the merit of the ball.”
