IND vs AUS: Shreyas Iyer Won't Be Part Of ICC World Cup 2023- Gautam Gambhir

Cricketer-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir feels that Shreyas Iyer won’t be part of the ICC World Cup 2023. According to Gambhir, someone will replace Shreyas Iyer in the India squad later.

His words arrive after Shreyas Iyer played just one game during Asia Cup 2023. The right-handed batter suffered an injury after the first game of the tournament, due to which he was dropped from rest games. Iyer only played the opening match against Pakistan in which he hit 14 runs.

His injury resurfaced after the IND vs PAK match and he was compelled to opt out of the playing XI. However, Iyer came to the field in Asia Cup 2023 after his recovery. He was again hampered by his injury.

Shreyas Iyer Would Not Be Part Of World Cup Squad: Gautam Gambhir

While Speaking on Star Sports, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir said that Shreyas Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him.

“It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for Asia Cup, play one match and then again become unfit. I don’t think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament.

You will see in the coming days that Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him. You should always go into a World Cup with fit players. Performance is a different thing”, Gambhir said.

Gambhir also noted that management is unaware of Shreyas Iyer’s form as he has been out of the field for a long time.

Imagine if a player suffers from a spasm or some other thing then you cannot find a replacement. So if Iyer hasn’t been fit in this tournament then it is very difficult for him to be part of the World Cup because of his injury and then we don’t even know how is form is presently. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate,” the 41-year-old further said.

Shreyas Iyer got injured in March 2023 during the series against Australia. The right-handed batsman did not play in IPL 2023 due to his recovery. He underwent a surgery in April. He also missed tours to the West Indies and Ireland.

He returned to the side for Asia Cup 2023. However, due to his injury and fitness issues, he could only play one match. India has picked Shreyas Iyer in the ICC World Cup 2023 squad. However, the final squad will be sent to ICC before September 28, which is the deadline set by ICC to send the list of players.
