Rohit Sharma, on Sunday (September 17), led India to a stunning win over Sri Lanka in the final of Asia Cup 2023. The Men in Blue inflicted a humiliating 10-wicket defeat on the home side at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
It took India just over 15 overs to bowl Sri Lanka out for a record total of 50 runs. Mohammed Siraj was the star with the ball, taking a career-best 6 for 21 including 4 wickets in one over. The right-arm pacer dismissed Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva in his second over as Sri Lanka registered their second-lowest total in ODIs.
Allrounder Hardik Pandya picked up three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah accounted for 1. The Islanders’ decision to bat first after winning the toss turned into a nightmare as they kept losing wickets right from the word go. At one stage, they were reeling at 12 for 6 and even the 20-run mark was looking like a distant dream.
Chasing 51, the Rohit Sharma-led side crossed the finishing line in just 6.1 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan scored 23 not out while Shubman Gill made an unbeaten 27 as India chased down the modest total with utmost ease to win the Asia Cup for a record-extending eighth time.
Rohit Sharma forgets his passport:
After the historic triumph, India captain Rohit Sharma once again proved Virat Kohli right by hilariously forgetting his passport. Back in 2017, Virat Kohli said that he had never seen anyone forget things like Rohit Sharma does.
“The number of things Rohit Sharma forgets, I’ve never seen anyone else so forgetful. iPad, wallet, phone…not the small things, but daily use essentials.
I don’t care, I’ll get new one. he has no idea he’s left something, the bus would’ve travelled half way to the hotel and then he remembers ‘Oh, I left my iPad on the plane’. He’s left his passport also a few times. It was really difficult retrieving it. The logistical manager always asks, ‘Does Rohit Sharma have all his stuff?’. Once he gets a yes from Rohit then only does the bus departs,” Virat Kohli had said on Breakfast with Champions.
And on Sunday, Rohit Sharma proved him right once again by forgetting his passport. He had already boarded the bus with his teammates for the airport before a support staff member handed his passport to him.
