The Bangladesh National Cricket Team head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has provided a massive update on the participation of the captain and star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the upcoming match against the India National Cricket Team.

The Bangla Tigers will take on the Men In Blue on October 19 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. Ahead of the match, they suffered a major blow as there is a question mark over the participation of Shakib Al Hasan in the India clash.

Shakib Al Hasan suffered a left quad injury during the 11th match of World Cup 2023 against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand National Cricket Team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Friday, October 13.

He scored 40 runs in the match and then conceded 54 runs while taking a crucial wicket of Devon Conway. After completing his spell, Shakib didn’t attend the post-match presentation ceremony and he was taken for scans.

Meanwhile, Shakib took part in Bangladesh’s practice session in Pune, but as a pure batter as he didn’t bowl.

“He had a good batting session yesterday and did a little bit of running between the wickets,” Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha said on Wednesday.

At the moment he is OK – Chandika Hathurusingha on Shakib Al Hasan

Speaking on Wednesday, Chandika Hathurusingha said that they won’t play Shakib until and unless he is properly fit to compete. He said:

“We did a scan today, so we are waiting for the results. At the moment he is OK. We haven’t tried with bowling yet. So, he will come tomorrow morning and we will assess him again and then make a decision.

“If he is not ready to play, we won’t risk him. But if he’s ready, then there’s a chance of him playing tomorrow.”

The Bangladesh head coach has also said that they are not ruling out the possibility of Shakib Al Hasan taking the field as a pure batter against India.

With any injury situation, first, it’s the medical staff. They give us their opinion, and either they say green light or red light. They give us education on where the players are at,” he added.

“Then it comes to the captain and the coach to think is that a risk in terms of playing, in terms of tactically, whether if it is not 100 percent or you can do one discipline or both disciplines. That’s how the process works.”
