The 6th match of the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four stage saw the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team defeat the Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team by 6 runs on Friday, September 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
India won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match while both teams made plenty of changes to their playing XI for the dead rubber encounter. Batting first, Bangladesh’s top-order failed miserably and they were reduced to 59/4 before Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy showcased sheer batting brilliance to steady the ship. The duo looked comfortable against the Indian bowlers and stitched together 101 runs in 115 balls.
The man with the golden arm – Shardul Thakur – broke the partnership between Shakib and Hridoy to bring India back into the game. However, good contributions from Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan meant that Bangladesh were able to post 265/8 on the board.
Chasing the target, Shubman Gill single-handedly fought from the top order as he hit a remarkable ton (121) and Axar Patel gave the Indians fans hope as he hit a brilliant 42 runs from the lower order. However, that wasn’t enough as India were bundled out for 259.
Yes, we gave the guys a chance who haven’t played much – Shakib Al Hasan
Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony after winning the match and the Player of the Match award, Shakib Al Hasan said that they gave some players a chance who didn’t have game time under their belt. Shakib Al Hasan said:
“Yes, we gave the guys a chance who haven’t played much. After the last couple of games here, we thought spinners will do well. Today, I went early and had time to spend on the crease. It was a challenging wicket. It was seaming a bit and it got easier when the ball got older.”
Shakib Al Hasan further lauded Mahedi Hasan and Tanzim Hasan Sakib for bowling brilliantly in the match. Shakib Al Hasan also said that Bangladesh will be a dangerous side in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be played in India.
“(On Mahedi Hasan) It wasn’t an easy time to bowl, he came to bowl and got us the breakthrough. He also bowled five overs at the end which is not easy for a spinner. Also, Tanzim bowled well at the start and took two wickets. We have got a very good team. A lot of players injured and some going in and out, that didn’t help us. I think we will be a dangerous side in the World Cup,” Shakib Al Hasan said.
