Bangladesh had won the toss and had opted to bowl first. The senior players, Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma made a return to the playing 11 after being rested to New Zealand white ball leg. India handed the cap to the young and dynamic pacer Kuldeep Sen.

The Men in Blue were bowled out for a below-par 186 inside 50 overs. KL Rahul was the stand-out batter who scored 73 runs in 70 balls where he struck 5 fours and 4 sixes where he was looking ominous. Bangladesh’s star spinner Shakib al Hasan foxed batters and took a 5-wicket haul for 36 runs in his spell of 10 overs.

In response to the 187 target, the Bangladeshi Tigers were roaring at 128-4 where Mahmudullah and Rahim were all set to take the team over the finish line. Then there was a dramatic collapse as Bangladesh lost 5 wickets for 8 runs and required another 50 runs with Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur. It looked like India would win from nowhere but Mehidy played the knock of his life as he scored 38 runs in 39 balls where he struck 4 fours and 2 six.

Skipper Rohit Sharma would be dejected, as they couldn’t close the game. Earlier, the batters showed no intent; but we should not forget that the skipper was spot-on with his captaincy. He rotated the bowlers quite smartly. India would  be hoping for a quick turnaround as the 2nd ODI is on Wednesday (07th December).

It was a very close game- Rohit Sharma

During the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma was asked about the match. “It was a very close game. We did pretty well to come back into that position. We didn’t bat well. 184 wasn’t good enough, but we bowled pretty well and they held their nerve in the end. If you look back how we bowled right from ball one – of course we would have loved to bowl better at the end – but we bowled pretty well for 40 overs and took overs,” said Rohit Sharma.

We just didn’t have enough runs- Rohit Sharma

“We just didn’t have enough runs. Another 25-30 runs would have helped. We were looking at 240-250 after the 25 over mark. When you keep losing wickets it is difficult. We need to learn and understand how to play on such wickets, “ he stated.

No excuse for us- Rohit Sharma

“No excuse for us because we are used to these wickets. I don’t really know how much they can improve in a couple of practice session. I feel the genes are there and it’s only about handling pressure. I am sure these guys will learn and we look forward to the next game. Hopefully, we can change things around. We know exactly what we need to do in these conditions,” he added.
