IND vs BAN: Kanpur Test under threat? Faruque Ahmed breaks silence on alleged security concerns
The second Test of the two-match Test series between India and Bangladesh is scheduled to be played in Kanpur from September 27. Ever since the news regarding security concerns in this Test broke out, there has been lots of speculation regarding the security of the visiting team.
But the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Faruque Ahmed has been assured by BCCI secretary Jay Shah that the Bangladesh cricket team will be provided the highest security and the match will go ahead as planned.
There have been threats of protests against the Bangladesh team during the second Test from Hindu Mahasabha for the alleged violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Since the political turmoil in Bangladesh, several minorities, mostly Hindus, have been brutally targeted by the mobs.
Faruque Ahmed responds to alleged security concerns regarding 2nd Test at Kanpur
During a recent interview with Sportstar, Faruque Ahmed was asked about the security issue of the second Test match at Kanpur. The BCB President replied that he has already spoken to Jay Shah regarding this matter who has assured him of the highest security.
"Yes, I spoke to Shah and he has assured me of providing the highest security to the team. Since it’s a bilateral series, it’s also easier for the Boards to beef up security as compared to a world event where multiple teams are involved," Faruque said.
The former Bangladesh cricketer further claimed that he is satisfied with BCCI's assurance regarding the safety of his team and they are not sending any additional security cover.
"So, the BCCI has given us the assurance, and at this point in time, we are happy with the conversations we had with the Board officials. The team is flying out to Chennai in a couple of days and we are not planning to send any additional security cover from our end," Faruque added.
Faruque Ahmed first Bangladesh player as BCB President
Faruque Ahmed was appointed the BCB president after Nazmul Hassan stepped down from the post after serving for 12 years. Hassan had to flee the country after the political turmoil in the country. Faruque Ahmed is the first-ever BCB president to have played international cricket for Bangladesh.
He played seven ODIs for Bangladesh between 1998 and 1999. The 58-year-old has scored 105 runs in ODIs at an average of 15. He has also served as the chairman of the national selection committee for quite a long period of time.
The first Test between India and Bangladesh will be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chennai from September 19-23. Meanwhile, the second and final Test of the series will be played at Green Park, Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.
Bangladesh will be high on confidence after their recent Test series win over Pakistan. They produced a scintillating display with bat and ball and created history by whitewashing Pakistan 2-0. They will be aiming to continue their good form and give India a tough fight here.
