IND vs BAN: Shreyas Iyer's Test career ends!! Former Indian cricketer rattles fans with the brutal truth
Former India opener Aakash Chopra reckons that Shreyas Iyer doesn't stand any chance of making it back to India's Test team anytime soon.
Iyer was not selected in India's squad for the first Test against Bangladesh beginning in Chennai on September 19.
Shreyas was dropped in India's last Test series earlier this year against England. Although Iyer had complained of constant back issues at that time, it was believed that his poor red-ball form led to his ouster from the team.
Iyer was replaced by Sarfaraz Khan in the team who impressed in his debut Test series. Sarfaraz has found a place in India's squad for the first Test but is unlikely to feature barring any injury issues.
Aakash Chopra breaks silence on Shreyas Iyer's prospects of returning to India's Test team
While speaking on his show 'Aakashvani' on YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra spoke about Shreyas' chances of making it to India's Test team.
Chopra noted that although Iyer played a crucial knock the last time India played Bangladesh, current circumstances are likely to rule him out of some Tests.
"It's interesting that last time when we beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh, Shreyas Iyer gave a very important performance in the last match.
We won because he played a crucial knock, but since then, the world has changed. I don't see any chances for Shreyas in Tests at the moment," Chopra said.
Shreyas Iyer was magnificent with the bat the last time India played Bangladesh. The match took place in Mirpur and Iyer scored 87 off 105 runs in the first innings and an unbeaten 29 in the second innings to see India home in a thrilling match.
In the second innings, India were in huge trouble at 74-7 at one stage but Iyer and Ashwin came together with a solid partnership of 71 runs to help India go past the finish line. Ashwin remained unbeaten in 42.
Will Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Dhruv Jurel make it to Playing XI?
While Shreyas Iyer is not added to the squad, Chopra also claimed that other batters like Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Dhruv Jurel might also not find a place in the Playing XI.
"Whoever is there will also not be able to play all the matches. The guys who are part of this team, which includes Sarfaraz (Khan), KL Rahul, and Dhruv Jurel, I feel they only won't be able to come in the XI. So where will Shreyas Iyer come in this?" the renowned commentator added.
Shreyas Iyer has played 14 Tests in his career and scored 811 runs at an average of 36.86. He is known to be an excellent player of spin and can play an attacking brand of cricket. However, his struggles in testing conditions in South Africa and England didn't help his cause.
Sarfaraz has been picked to play the second round of Duleep Trophy match which almost rules him out of the first Test against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, with the arrival of Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel's chances of making it to the Playing XI have also taken a hit.
Jurel was excellent in his debut Test series against England but India are likely to go with Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper. But KL Rahul is likely to feature in the first Test match in the middle order.
