Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri shared his views on India’s defeat in the Edgbaston Test against England National Cricket Team, saying that India seemingly lacked belief when they proceeded the play on Day 5.

Jasprit Bumrah-led India lost against Ben Stokes-led England by 7 wickets in the fifth and final Test. The five-match series ended in a 2-2 draw.

Notably, England were given a humongous target of 378 runs to chase, which they chased easily with the help of good innings by openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley on Day 4 and Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root’s sensational centuries on Day 5.

Speaking after the match, Ravi Shastri questioned India’s body language and said that Jasprit Bumrah and Co. looked flat when they stepped onto the field on Day 5.

“What was very surprising is India were really flat in the morning. Really flat. The belief to just pull this off, just wasn’t there,” Ravi Shastri told Sky Sports during his commentary stint on Tuesday.

Should have been brought into the attack much earlier – Ravi Shastri on Ravindra Jadeja

Former India head coach said that the left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja should have been brought into the attack earlier on Day 5. Shastri also agreed to the assessment made by Michael Atherton, that the spin-bowling all-rounder Jadeja looked flat in the match, with the ball.

“Really, should have been into the attack much earlier, Way too late. India should have focussed on just 3 bowlers. There was no need to think of Siraj or Shardul Thakur. It had to be Jadeja early. You could have started with two fast bowlers – Bumrah and Shami but Jadeja into the attack,” Shastri added.

“Yes, and just that last delivery is an example of that (Jadeja being flat). When he is darting the all, he is never going to hit those patches, which are a little fuller. It will only happen if the ball goes above the eye line and dips,” he added.
