Former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar urged the team management to groom young batter Rinku Singh as a finisher by providing consistent chances. Abhishek Nayar highlighted that Rinku Singh is ‘tailor-made’ to play the role of a finisher for the Indian National Cricket Team.
Rinku Singh excelled as a finisher for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2023. The southpaw scored 416 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 145.45 while batting at the No. 5 and 6 positions. Notably, he emerged as the leading run-getter among batters in those positions during IPL 2023.
Just About Grooming Rinku Singh – Abhishek Nayar
During a conversation with Jio Cinema, Abhishek Nayar emphasized the significance of Rinku Singh‘s inclusion in the squad, especially with all-rounder Hardik Pandya batting higher up in the order.
“With Hardik Pandya transforming into a role of a batter and playing higher up the order, you need someone down the order who can finish off the job for you,” Nayar told JioCinema.
“You did have someone like Axar Patel for it, but Rinku is tailor-made. He has been a prolific run-getter across formats in domestic cricket. It is just about grooming him and constantly giving those opportunities,” he adeed.
Rinku Singh received his maiden call-up to the national team for the three-match T20I series against Ireland. Although the left-handed batter made his international debut in the series opener, he didn’t have a chance to bat in the first match.
Hardik Pandya Has Now Evolved As A Batter – Abhishek Nayar
The Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach pointed out that Rinku Singh should be given the same opportunities as Tilak Varma.
“The last player India had tagged as a finisher was Dinesh Karthik. Hardik had performed that role terrifically as well, but he has now evolved as a batter who can take responsibility up the order. That is why the outlook towards Rinku should be the same as we are looking towards Tilak,” he concluded.
The Jasprit Bumrah-led team registered a narrow two-run victory via DLS in the first T20I in Dublin on Friday, August 18. The visitors restricted the opposition to 139 runs after opting to bowl first. The Men in Blue scored 47/2 before the rain interruption.
