Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar expressed his dissatisfaction with the approach of the Indian batters during the match against Bangladesh. Sunil Gavaskar stated that Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill threw away their wickets despite getting a good start with the bat.
The Rohit Sharma-led team secured a convincing seven-wicket victory against Bangladesh in Pune on Thursday, October 19. The Indian bowlers restricted the opposition to a total of 256-8 in 50 overs. The hosts chased down the target with more than 8 overs to spare.
Shubman Gill Threw His Wicket Away – Sunil Gavaskar
Speaking to Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar criticized the impatience of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, who threw away their wickets despite good starts in the match.
“He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19, threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
“Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket. And that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, realizing that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come every day,” he added.
Rohit Sharma (48) and Shubman Gill shared an 88-run opening partnership. Shubman Gill reached his first World Cup half-century but failed to convert into a triple-digit score. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz while attempting a big shot.
Shreyas Iyer Is Throwing Away The Opportunity – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the significance of converting good starts into centuries for players like Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. He pointed out that Gill is showing the ability to reach three-figure scores, but Iyer is missing out on hundreds despite favorable conditions.
“You need to know how to get to a hundred and it’s important for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill is at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity,” Gavaskar further stated.
The Men in Blue registered their fourth consecutive win in the ongoing ICC tournament. The Indian team will take on New Zealand, the table-toppers, in their next match in Dharamsala on Sunday, October 22.
