Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar was relieved man after rain stopped the India-Pakistan Super 4 match in Colombo on Sunday. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Akhtar slammed the Pakistan skipper for choosing to bowl first as Indian openers Gill and Rohit added a 121-run opening stand in less than 17 overs. The stand was finally broken but not before both the openers got to their fifties.

Rohit scored his 50th ODI fifty while Gill scored his eighth. The Indian skipper took a liking to Pakistan spinner Shadab Khan while Gill hit six fours in Shaheen Afridi’s first spell of three overs.

Shadab finally dismissed Rohit in the 17th over to break the opening stand. Shaheen then dismissed Gill in the very next over. India then added another 24 runs off 38 balls with Virat Kohli (8) and KL Rahul (17) at the wicket.

The rain came down in the 25th over to finally halt play. Shoaib Akhtar on his official X handle spoke about the rain beak saying that the rain came to Pakistan’s rescue after India’s good start.

“Well. I don’t see this starting again. Colombo ki baarish is crazy,” wrote Akhtar on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a video of himself.

I Don’t See The Game Starting Again: Shoaib Akhtar

“Hey guys, it’s me Shoaib, match dekhne aaya tha, hum sare fans bhi wait kar rahe hai, Indians bhi Pakistani bhi. Lekin barish ne bacha liya humein, finally! Pehle India phass gya tha humare aagey, barish ne bacha lia. Aaj hum phas gaye the India ke samne, shukr hai barish ne bach lia. (I came to watch the match, we are all waiting, Indian and Pakistani fans. Rain saved us, rain saved India the other day, but today rain saved us!),” Akhtar was heard saying in the video.

“Hope match can finish off and we’ll be able to resume this time tomorrow, and by making a wise decision not to bowl first,” the 48-year-old added.

The IND-PAK game has a reserve day on Monday (September 11). In case the match is rained out on Sunday, the match will resume on Monday from the point it left off. However, the umpires are keen on finishing the match on Sunday itself even if a 20-overs-per-side game can be played.
