Pakistan, on Tuesday (October 10), proved their title credentials by registering a historic win over Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad in the ongoing 2023 World Cup.

Pakistan had their back against the wall after Sri Lanka finished their innings on 344 for 9 thanks to centuries from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Mendis smashed the fastest century for Sri Lanka in a World Cup match, reaching the milestone in just 65 balls, and went on to score 122 runs off just 77 balls. On the other hand, Samarawickrama scored an 89-ball 108 for his maiden hundred.

The Men in Green had to pull off a record World Cup chase to extend their winning start to the campaign. And they started in a disastrous fashion as Imam-ul-Haq (12) and captain Babar Azam (10) departed cheaply. With Pakistan reeling at 37 for 2, Sri Lanka were well on top before Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan took charge.

Both the batsmen went on to score brilliant centuries and bat Sri Lanka out of the game. Shafique scored 113 runs from 103 balls before being dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana. Rizwan, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 131 off 121 balls as Pakistan crossed the finishing line with 10 balls to spare. The duo added 176 runs for the third wicket before Rizwan shared another 95-run stand with Saud Shakeel for the fourth wicket.

Huge support for Pakistan in Hyderabad:

Pakistan have been staying in Hyderabad ever since they landed in the city last month for the World Cup. And the Men in Green would be delighted with the support they have received from the Hyderabad crowd so far. When they arrived at the airport, hundreds of fans cheered them and gave them a warm welcome, prompting the likes of Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Rizwan to take to social media and appreciate the gesture.

They have also received good support from the fans during the games and it was very evident on Tuesday (October 10) when they were involved in a record run-chase against Sri Lanka. As the Babar Azam-led side headed towards the target, the Hyderabad crowd was heard chanting ‘Jeetega bhai jeetega, Pakistan jeetega’. A video of the moment has gone viral on social media.
