Mohammad Rizwan, on Tuesday (October 10), starred with the bat as Pakistan chased down a record total of 345 runs to beat Sri Lanka in the eighth game of the ongoing 2023 World Cup. It is the highest successful chase in the history of the World Cup.
The record was previously held by Ireland who chased down 328 against England in 2011. Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a big total of 344 runs for 9 wickets. Kusal Mendis smashed a 65-ball ton and went on to score 122 off just 77 balls while Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 108 off 89 balls.
In reply, Pakistan made a disastrous start and were reeling at 37 for 2 after losing the big wickets of Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Babar Azam (10). However, a huge stand of 176 runs between centurions Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan revived the chase and laid the foundation for the famous win.
Matheesha Pathirana broke the stand when he dismissed Shafique for 113. Mohammad Rizwan, however, stood firm at his end. He shared another crucial stand of 95 runs with Saud Shakeel for the fourth wicket before the latter departed for 31. The wicketkeeper-batsman went on to take his team home in the 49th over and remained unbeaten on 131 runs.
Mohammad Rizwan dedicates his century to Gaza:
Mohammad Rizwan has dedicated his match-winning century against Sri Lanka to the ???brothers and sisters in Gaza???. On Wednesday (October 11), he took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce it. Gaza, the Palestinian exclave, is currently involved in a war against Israel. It began after militant group Hamas launched a devastating and coordinated assault on Israel last week.
The Israeli Defense Forces have stated that over 900 Israelis have been killed, and over 2,700 injured. On the other hand, the Palestinian Health Ministry, on Tuesday (October 10), said that 770 people have been killed in Gaza, and 4,000 injured.
???This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza,??? wrote Mohammad Rizwan before adding: ???Happy to contribute in the win. Credits to the whole team and especially Abdullah Shafique and Hassan Ali for making it easier. Extremely grateful to the people of Hyderabad for the amazing hospitality and support throughout.???
