Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised skipper Rohit Sharma for his brilliant half-century against Pakistan in the Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2023. Ravi Shastri said that Rohit Sharma didn’t miss out on the loose balls and punished them for boundaries.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added a magnificent 121-run partnership after being asked to bat first in Colombo on Sunday, September 10. The Indian skipper scored 56 runs off 49 balls, including six boundaries and four maximums, before being dismissed by Shadab Khan.

Rohit Sharma Got An Opportunity Today – Ravi Shastri

Speaking to Star Sports during the rain interruption, Ravi Shastri highlighted that Rohit Sharma faced a challenging phase at the start of his innings against Naseem Shah but improved afterwards, hitting loose deliveries for boundaries.

“There was a 10-ball phase from Naseem Shah at the start that beat him. He was trying to lay bat on ball but he could not. He went through that period and every time he got an opportunity today with anything remotely loose, he hit it over the boundary or to the boundary,” Shastri told Star Sports.

Rohit was dismissed for a low score in his previous match against Pakistan in the group stage. The right-handed batter scored 11 runs off 22 balls with the help of two boundaries. Shaheen Afridi dismissed Rohit with a brilliant inswinging delivery.

Showed Intent In Spite Of That Good Spell – Ravi Shastri

The former Indian all-rounder said that he was impressed with Rohit Sharma’s strong gameplan of capitalizing on loose deliveries, highlighting his intent to hit them for boundaries or sixes.

“Rohit did not miss out on a single lose ball today, which showed that in spite of that good spell from the bowlers, the intent was that ‘anything lose, I’m going to hit it for a boundary or six’,” Shastri further added.

The MI skipper achieved a significant milestone, reaching his 50th half-century in the 50-over international cricket format. Rain interrupted the game at 147-2 in 24.1 overs, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul at the crease. The match will resume on the reserve day, Monday, at the same score.
