Indian skipper Rohit Sharma admitted that he has drawn inspiration from legendary batter Chris Gayle in his cricketing journey. Rohit Sharma hoped that Chris Gayle would be pleased because a batter with the same jersey number (45) broke his record in international cricket.
Rohit Sharma broke Chris Gayle’s record for hitting the most sixes in men’s international cricket during the match against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. The batter scored 131 runs off 84 balls, including 16 fours and five sixes, in Delhi on Wednesday, October 11.
Universe Boss Is Universe Boss – Rohit Sharma
In a video posted by the BCCI, Rohit Sharma expressed admiration for Gayle’s powerful six-hitting ability and the impact he’s made in cricket.
“Universe Boss is Universe Boss. Obviously, I have taken a leaf out of his books. Over the years, we have seen him. Such a six-hitting machine he is, wherever he plays. We wear the same jersey. Number 45. Number 45 has done it, I am sure he’s happy,” Rohit told the BCCI.
Chris Gayle previously held the record of 553 sixes in 551 innings across the formats of international cricket. Rohit surpassed Gayle’s record in his 473rd international innings. He achieved the milestone with a brilliantly timed pull shot against Naveen ul Haq.
It Is A Small Happy Moment For Me – Rohit Sharma
The 36-year-old batter expressed his surprise at hitting so many sixes in his career, acknowledging the hard work he’s put in to develop his game.
“When I started playing this game, I never thought I would be able to hit sixes, leave alone that many sixes. Obviously, a lot of work has been put into it over the years. So, I am quite happy with the work that I have done.”
“I am the sort of person who is not satisfied (with what he has been doing), and I want to continue what I am doing. My focus is on that. Yeah, it is a small happy moment for me,” he further added.
Rohit Sharma was adjudged Player of the Match in India’s convincing eight-wicket victory against Afghanistan. He will be next seen in action during the high-octane encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14.
