Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday (October 11), added yet another feather to his already illustrious cap. The Team India captain broke a major batting record during the 2023 World Cup match between India and Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The right-handed batsman led from the very front as India thrashed Afghanistan by 8 wickets to register their second win in as many games in the ongoing competition. Batting first, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 272 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) scoring fifties.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for 39 in his 10 overs. In reply, India chased down the total in just 35 overs with utmost ease thanks to a blazing century from Rohit Sharma. He smashed a record 63-ball ton and went on to score 131 runs before being sent back by Rashid Khan. Virat Kohli also scored a fifty as India crossed the finishing line with 15 overs to spare.

Rohit Sharma responds to Chris Gayle:

During his blistering knock, Rohit Sharma broke former West Indies batsman Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in international cricket. Gayle has hit 553 sixes in 551 innings in international cricket. And it has taken Rohit Sharma just 473 innings to break the West Indies great’s record. Gayle and Rohit Sharma are the only batsmen with 500 or more sixes in international cricket.

The cricketing world was quick to congratulate the India batting star for his achievement and Gayle also made sure to convey his regards. He took to his official X handle and congratulated the India opener. Posting a photo of himself with Rohit, Gayle wrote: “Congrats, @ImRo45 – Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special”

And Rohit had a brilliant reply to Gayle as he wrote: “Thanks CG. 4&5 on the back but our favorite number is 6.”

Later, Rohit also opened up on his six-hitting abilities. In a video uploaded by BCCI after the game, the veteran opener revealed that he has taken inspiration from Gayle in his six-hitting journey.

“Universe Boss is Universe Boss. Obviously, I have taken a leaf out of his books. Over the years, we have seen him. Such a six-hitting machine he is, wherever he plays. We wear the same jersey. Number 45. Number 45 has done it, I am sure he’s happy,” said Rohit.

Rohit would be looking to continue his form when India take on Pakistan in their next World Cup outing. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday (October 14) in Ahmedabad.
