India captain Rohit Sharma opened up about promoting Rishabh Pant to the top of the order in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He stated that after he saw a keeper-batter bat in the first few games in the IPL 2024, he made up his mind that he would promote Pant.
In what was the biggest move by the Indian team in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, Rishabh Pant was promoted up the order by the team management. The keeper-batter made sure that he repaid the faith of the management as he oozed his class with the bat.
Rishabh Pant was first tested at No.3 in the warmup game against Bangladesh and he returned with dividends. The keeper-batter played a sensational innings and looked in complete control as he slammed bowlers all over the park. He walked off after scoring a brisk 53 runs.
In India’s first game in the T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland, Rishabh Pant again walked out to bat at No.3. After Virat Kohli got out early, the keeper-batter held the fort for his team and made sure he stayed there till the end.
On a pitch, where batting seemed difficult, Rishabh Pant oozed his class with the bat and although he took some blows on the body, he made sure he bats till the end. He played an unbeaten innings of 36 runs off 26 balls. He batted with a strike rate of around 140 and also hit 3 fours and 2 sixes in his innings.
Rohit Sharma talked about Rishabh Pant batting at No.3 and claimed that the keeper-batter’s counter-attacking skill will be helpful for the team. But the captain also stated that no one’s batting position is fixed apart from the openers. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
"Watched Pant play the first few matches in the IPL and made up my mind. It was about having the right batting position. His counter-attacking skill will be helpful, given we cannot play Yashasvi. He has got an all-round game. Besides the openers, none of the other batting positions is fixed, unless it us a Super Over. We want to be flexible.”
“Playing good cricket holds the key”- Rohit Sharma ahead of Pakistan clash
Rohit Sharma further talked about the game against Pakistan, saying that they are confident and the body language of the players will play a huge part for the team. He added that playing good cricket will be key for them and they will try their best. He elaborated:
"I am pretty confident. The body language plays a big part for any game. There is no room for complacency. Any team can beat any on a given day. You cannot relax. If you don't have a good day, you can take some brilliant catches and that can change the complexion of the game.
"Playing good cricket holds the key. We have spoken about the conditions here. And have plans in place. We will try to give our best. There is a lot of experience in our changing room. Making the right decision will be key.”
India and Pakistan will be taking on each other on 9th June at the Nassau International Cricket Stadium in New York.
