Former India wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, who recently played for RCB along with Virat Kohli before announcing his retirement, feels Indian captain Rohit Sharma played the ugliest knock of his career yesterday against Ireland.

Rohit Sharma starred with the bat as he scored a half-century in very tough conditions at the Nassau County Stadium in New York. The Indian captain was perhaps very lucky yesterday to not have lost his wicket against the Irish bowlers who had started the 2nd innings positively. He had also come out with a new opening pair instead of what all of us had expected.

Virat Kohli, following a sensational IPL 2024 season as an opener, paired up Rohit Sharma for their first group game. This fixture was the first implementation of the new pairing, which is expected to remain the same in India's next match against arch-rivals Pakistan. While Rohit was able to swing his bat well, Kohli struggled evidently before returning to the pavilion for just 1 off 5.

While Rohit Sharma had the element of luck, Virat Kohli did not have any luck by his side as his constant wish to go down the track saw him land a thick edge. Mark Adair had set up a very good trap for the Indian batting stalwart who fell for it on his first World Cup match as an opening batsman.

What did Dinesh Karthik say about Rohit Sharma's innings?

While speaking in Cricbuzz's post-match T20 World Cup show, Dinesh Karthik said that Rohit Sharma's 52 was one of the ugliest innings ever by the batter. And the reason behind it was the slow and tough surface in New York. Karthik argued whether Rohit's confidence would have been boosted after the innings.

Karthik stated that batters, even if it's Rohit Sharma, won't get much confidence out of this surface because they battle against luck. Dinesh Karthik also admitted that Rohit won't feel too good about the innings but he will be satisfied to have helped his side get over the victory line ultimately.

"It was probably one of his ugliest knocks going around in international cricket, mainly because of the pitch. Will he get a lot of confidence? You can't get too much confidence from this pitch because you are fighting against luck a lot of times. It's not something that you'll feel good about. You'll just feel satisfied that you got the job done for the team," Dinesh Karthik said via Cricbuzz.

Karthik says Rohit got a taste of how to play on tough pitches

Dinesh Karthik further said that Rohit Sharma will get a lot of belief from the innings he played in New York and will give him the idea and belief as to how one should bat on tough pitches.

"Overall it's an inning that will give him the belief that on tough pitches, there is a method that he has, which he will back and try and do, but also know at the back of his mind that it need not be successful the next day," Karthik concluded.
