Ahead of the mouthwatering clash between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup this week, batting superstar Virat Kohli has opened up on his iconic knock of 183 runs against the arch-rivals.

In the 2012 Asia Cup, Virat Kohli played one of the best ODI knocks of all time to power India to a historic win over Pakistan in the continental championship. Team India were staring down the barrel after centuries from Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed propelled Pakistan to a huge total of 329 for 6.

Chasing such a huge total against an attack like Pakistan’s and that too under the floodgates was a humongous task. And India’s task became only tougher after they began their reply in a disastrous fashion as Gautam Gambhir fell lbw to the second ball of the innings. But from thereon, it was only one-way traffic as Virat Kohli took charge of the chase.

The right-handed batsman shared century-plus stands with Sachin Tendulkar (52) and Rohit Sharma (68) to put India on the front foot. By the time, he was dismissed in the 48th over, India needed only 12 runs to chase down the record total. In the end, India crossed the finishing line with 13 balls to spare. Virat Kohli’s 183-run knock came off 148 balls and was studded with 22 fours and one six.

Virat Kohli recalls his iconic knock:

Virat Kohli will have an opportunity to play a similar knock against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup. And ahead of the much-awaited clash, the batting superstar has recalled his 183-run knock against the Men in Green. Speaking to Star Sports, the former India skipper said he never thought he would score 183 runs in an ODI match, let alone while chasing.

“The most satisfying [knock] I would say was 183 because it was an Asia Cup match and India-Pakistan was a big game for me. I had not played too many India-Pakistan matches before that. At that time, I did not have that much idea about the build-up to the match.

“Now, we take it in a normal way, but at that time so much excitement was created. The match was viewed in such a way that as a youngster you feel the atmosphere is something different,” said Virat Kohli.

“I had never thought that I would score so many runs in an innings and that too while chasing – 183. That day I was in a different zone naturally. I had not planned anything and was just playing instinctively. As the match progressed, my zone became stronger.

“Later on, I realized that maybe I surprised myself a little bit. I felt like I can score hundreds, but to score 180 was a big thing for me, especially against a side like Pakistan with so much on the line on that game,” he added.
