India captain Rohit Sharma had a fantastic start to the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The Men in Blue thrashed Ireland in their first game of the tournament and made sure that they began their journey on a dominating note.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India thumped Ireland by 8 wickets in their first game of the tournament. The match between the two teams took place on Wednesday (June 5th) at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Rohit Sharma had a sensational game both as a skipper as well as the batter. He made brilliant bowling changes in the game and thanks to that, the Men in Blue bundled out the opposition for just 96 runs and didn’t let them bat even for 20 overs at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

On the batting front, it was skipper Rohit Sharma, who shined with the bat and made sure that he helped his team win the game. The India captain slammed a magnificent half-century in tough circumstances and ensured that he took his team close to the target.

Despite the uneven bounce on the pitch, Rohit Sharma looked magnificent with the bat and made sure that he stayed there and guided the other players on how to play on pitches, where batting looked extremely tough as the ball was doing a lot.

Rohit Sharma slammed a blistering half-century as he scored 52 runs off 37 runs. He batted with a strike rate of around 140 and also slammed 3 sixes and 4 fours in his innings. The batter looked good to eyes but got retired hurt after copping a blow on his elbow.

During the post-match presentation, Shaun Pollock was interviewing Rohit Sharma and asked him: “In the T20 format, you sometimes have to adjust your plan and show certain variations. What was your plan out there once you saw what the pitch was doing… try to stick and hit the hard lengths?”

But as Rohit Sharma started to answer, the mic started malfunctioning. However, to make up for that Shaun Pollock came up with a heartwarming gesture and stated: "I think your mic might be gone. I'll hold it for you."

Rohit Sharma speaks about pitch conditions after win over Ireland

After the win over Ireland, Rohit Sharma talked about the pitch and said that even in the second innings, they were unsure of how the pitch would play. He also lauded his bowler for his sensational performances and stated:

"I said it at the toss as well. Quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch. I don't think the wicket settled down even when we batted second. There was enough for the bowlers.

“That's pretty much what you got to do. Try to hit those lengths consistently. All these guys have played a lot of Test cricket. His two wickets upfront set the tone for us. Don't think we can play four spinners here,” he concluded.
